Huge boom on Soft Sand after impressively winning her only two starts. To the eye she looks outstanding, but is yet to produce speedfigures to match the expectations. Probably will do so soon - but until proven we should give Lady Antebellum (heading both speed categories) a good chance of defeating her. Should have won last start - and you would anticipate she would appreciate getting back around a turn. A race with no speed, and from a good draw Lady Antebellum has the capacity to kick on turning (off a moderate tempo) and perhaps set up a winning break. Naturally, Soft Sand will be flying home (and this is the shortest straight she has yet to encounter).

Unspectacular, but solid performance, with a winning result coming from Flemington when supporting the top-rated speed selections, with Royal Mail @ $3.60 & First Command @ $5.30 returning a profit from the 7 rated races on the card. Also, from the nominated (**) speed horses a similar result with a 5.3 unit return for a 4 unit outlay. Noting once again that the feature race winner on the program - the Listed Kensington Stakes - was the horse with the best speed credentials. Winners today were:

Typically brilliant results in the sprints (where speed data works best) with the two sprints at Flemington today being won by Ravenous Lass $6.00 (best speed - best recent speed - speed best) & Leoncita $8.00 (equal 2nd best recent speed). In Leoncita's race the horse with best recent speed - Lady Antebellum - ran a close 2nd and the exacta paid $65.30. But even if backing the top rated speed horses today from the 7 rated races there was a healthy return of 9.1 units for outlay of 7 units.

Looking to Royal Mail to bounce back to winning form in this. A victim of 'small field syndrome' last start when race was more like a trial than a serious contest and he was not allowed to be tough & resolute as he had been when winning with strong speedfigures the start before.
