Not the best of days with just one winner Maquina @ 4.90 - from our 7 recommended ** speed selections. There was $6.00 available on Maquina early in day - but unfortunately she was one week late for clients after her unlucky 4th last week when $61.00/$15.00 at Sandown. Still a good result from her today - while two of the other recommended selections came 2nd.
If backing best recent speed at the MV program there was a strong profit with two winners and a return of $10.90 for an $8.00 outlay.

Only 2 races rated for the program with both top rated horses running 2nd. Miss Octopussy was very heavily supported and should have won after being knocked down mid-race & still charging home with a big weight over the 955m. Whitlam was nosed out @ $5.00 after not getting out early enough from a pocket & then being claimed in the last stride. However, in Miss Octopussy's race (race 4) the top 4 speed horses were the first four home with dividends: (Unitab) exacta $16.00; trifecta $69.00; and First Four $333.40.

Only 2 winners for the day at Flemington (one really - Black Caviar is a gimme) with top rated He's Remarkable the best result. Everyone was in the same boat with shock results the order of the day. The feature race The Emirates saw the top rated Love Conquers All (best speed - best recent speed - speed best**) the centre of a plunge from $9.00 into $6.00 - but jockey Darren Beadman only rated his effort as a 1 out of 10. Perhaps the difference between winning & losing. Winner Albert The Fat $19.10 had 4th best recent speed & our top 5 speed selections snared both the trifecta of $1796.80 - and the First Four of $8277.90 (NSW TAB).
Similarly in race 4 our top 6 speed horses found the trifecta of $2200.40 & the First Four of $9416.70 (Unitab).

Winner of Oaks, Mosheen, is yet another horse this Spring to win a feature G1 event while having best speed & best recent speed for the event. Only 2 recommended horses yesterday, with both being very heavily supported by their respective stables: Miss Octopussy backed in from $11.00 into $7.50 and ran 3rd (fixed $3.80 place was available) - while Cosmic Causeway was backed as though unbeatable from $4.80 into $2.60 and finished 4th. Further highlighting that the speed data identifies what the stables know about their respective horses heading into race day.
Overall not the resounding success of previous days from the Carnival.

Huge performance from the speed data of Speedratings. Another feature G1 winner with clients having known for some time that I regarded Pinker Pinker as one of the best mares in the country. The speed data identified her very early in her career as being up to this level, and while the 'shooting star' fillies of last season faltered and faded, she lived up to (speed) expectations and proved the data once again correct. Pinker Pinker: she gets the second preference and is a strong longshot hope. Set peak speedfigures from her last-start 2nd in the Epsom behind Secret Admirer - but I place her above that mare on the basis of her proven ability in races beyond the mile, and her ability to handle the tricky Moonee Valley circuit. Perhaps ridden too close in the Epsom, they may elect to ride her for luck (given the strong prospect of early speed & awkward barrier) and expose her late. Has a devastating sprint under the right circumstances. Would be a very good longshot bet given her speed credentials.

From the recommended 4 speed horses today there were 2 winners: Sepoy @ $1.30 and Love Conquers All @ $4.90 (should have been able to get the $6.00 though as he was these odds practically all the way through betting). The other 2 were a narrowly beaten 2nd - and a 4th (beaten in a photo at great each-way odds). A strong profit if you supported all 4 - equally good if you left the short-priced favourite Sepoy out. Finding the right races to bet in is a vital factor in having success. Very impressive effort from the speed data of speedratings to identify just how tricky this meeting was - and in doing so isolate the best races for success. From the 5 nominated speed horses today we had 2 winners. Unsurprisingly, Sepoy was one of these at the prohibitive odds of $1.14. But our other winner was Pinker Pinker @ $7.00 - or $9.00 if you took the generous odds available on Friday. Knowing which races to leave alone can be just as important as finding winners in the selected races: profit is maximised by eliminating wasted bests. In addition, Unique Quality had best recent speed in the Danehill Stakes and paid $7.20 for the place. Although it did appear after a long run of success that we could win every week, realistically that is not possible. From the 7 nominated speed horses today we had one winner - and 4 second placings. The winner was Pinwheel @ $3.20 - although I know that $4.60 was available earlier. At Moonee Valley our top rated horse in the feature race - Hot Spin - got out to $12.00 and after being tested early he still shot clear on straightening. Unfortunately he was run down by a horse (Amah Rock) who had been an emergency. Hot Spin still paid an excellent $4.40 for the place. Nearly another day of great results - but not quite.
